(EN). There is the fluffy and stylish Bowler that reminds a little of Mr.It, the nice and hairy relative of the Addams, or the Earcuffs studded with pearls. The world of Federica Moretti is a fairy microcosm, made of veils and rabbit ears, baby pink Cloche and Fedora classics.
Born in 1983, modenese doc, Federica took her first steps in the fashion world when she was very young, experimenting with eccentric and unusual looks. Graduated with honors at the IED, with a burst of creativity, not inclined to compromise on the market, she transfers her passion for the visual arts and experimentation also in her brand.
A stilish baseball cap
With a specialization at the School of Visual Arts in New York, in 2006, very young, she created Federica Moretti, her personal line of hats. Her remarkable talent and exceptional craftsmanship project her, in a few years, to the top of the fashion Olympus. Iconic are the paper models made with such craftsmanship as to look like velour and the Beanies with Mickey Mouse ears.
A playful Beanie
Glamorous, ironic, irreverent, Federica brings her personal touch even in the Borsalino style office, giving the historic brand of millinery a fresh and young touch. The collaborations with the big names in fashion follow one another at an incessant pace, from Jil Sander to MSGM the most prestigious brands turn to her to customize the styling of their fashion shows.
Her hats, easily recognizable, end up on Vogue, Flair, Glamour, bounce from one e-commerce site to another, it is practically impossible not to find it simultaneously on Farfetch and Luisa Via Roma, and since 2007 they are sold exclusively for the American market from Barney’s NY.
A furry model
Lady Gaga, Madonna and Rihanna are part of that long list of celebrities bewitched by the charm of her models, all handmade in Italy. Iconic pieces, with a strong and irreverent character, just like Federica who, despite her success, has remained a simple girl, with her feet firmly planted on the ground, aware of moving in an ecosystem, the fashionable one, where it is so easy to reach fame and the favor of the editors how much to lose them in a few seasons.
The success for a designer is never the goal, but only an intermediate stage of a long and often tiring journey, to which it must sacrifice time and private space. In an incessant solicitation of images and stimuli, Federica knows that she must always feed the souls and eyes of the spectators with new objects of desire. The tension to beauty knows no rest, it is infinite and demands dedication.
So in 2017, with a well-established career, she creates Huma Sunglasses, a new line of accessories that, she is keen to point out, can be accessorised. The goal is not only to amaze, but also to offer the consumer the ability to customize every eyewear according to their taste.
The ends of the glasses can be customized with pearls, chains, crystals, jewelry and even hair extensions. In short, a model equipped with many interchangeable accessories, depending on the outfit or mood … or even just to never get bored…

CHATTING WITH FEDERICA…
Hello Federica, I am very happy to meet you again after many years. Your career is booming! Doesn’t that scare you a bit?
Hello Paola, eh it has passed many, 12 to be exact since I started this adventure. It doesn’t scare me because I never think about it! The commitment and attention must always be like the first day, the thing that scares me instead is that everything can change in a moment.
Hats are not an easy product. Their use has been greatly reduced during the ‘ 900 and in Italy the artisan heritage linked to the sector has drastically decreased. Historical companies like Borsalino go through very difficult moments. In spite of everything, you believed it. You think this is the key to your success?
I think it’s the passion I have for this job. The enthusiasm that I put in everything. The challenge of creating new, ironic, extroverted collections. The desire to improve myself always.
Let’s talk some of your hats. I remember that the first models were in paper and in the office that you shared with two girls every now and then peeped out your dad too… what has changed?
In 2006 together with five of my friends I opened the studio in Via Sciesa, was an extremely stimulating and full of emotions, all we did different things, photography, interior design, motion graphic and creative confrontation was constant and stimulating. I started to create hats with alternative materials. At that time there were no courses or Masters that could teach me this job. Only when I started to collaborate with Borsalino, a few years later, I discovered the world of the hats and the dynamics of this beautiful work. Then came the collaborations with the designers and my brand. The change was obliged, commitments, spaces and requirements over the years have changed.
I have been following your work for several years, I have always found the way in which you have managed to find a balance between portability and the unusual. Can we say that you have given life to the phenomenon of Hat-Couture?
Hat-Couture has always existed. I tried to bring eccentricity into everyday life. When I imagine the collection, before I begin to realize it, the images in my head are surreal but I think that there can always be someone who through my hats can feel represented and can give vent to their creativity.
Is there a model of the winter collection that best represents you?
Of the winter collection my favorite models are the maxi hats in faux-fur. Huge Cloches in Murmasky, baseball hats, Beanies oversized. But also the felt hats of lapin monocolor.
I know you’ve also developed a young line, with more content prices, called Blue. How’s it going?
By now the knitting collection has been integrated into the main collection. It’s going well. Here the challenge is even greater: to create special hats, but still portable in everyday life, always different and ironic.
Do young people like hats?
I think they do! All types of hats are not used daily but, especially during the winter, caps, wool or felt hats are present in the daily clothing.
A preview of the SS 2019 collection
We talked about the winter line. Can you already give me some little anticipation about spring?
For the next spring, yellow, transparent and spotted plastic covers have been created, which can be put on all types of hats to protect themselves from the rain or as protection of the straw hats with overlapping games.
You realize especially hats and caps, but if I remember correctly you have also created fascinators at the beginning of your journey. Do you think it’s an accessory still present?
I think that everything can be current, depends on the materials and the shapes. In the new summer collection there are Panama hats with broken and asymmetrical veils superimposed on animalier silk scarves or headpices with live cut, hairstyles created with silk fabrics or decorative birds.
A good purpose for the 2019…
Always do better. I recently started a new brand! This time the challenge is in the world of eyewear: Huma sunglasses, so it is called the new collection of sunglasses and opticals accessoriable.
Federica when she’s not working…
I like to travel and if I’m not around I like to stay in my city, Milan is beautiful on Sunday! A walk to the park with Blue (my bully), an exhibit, a dinner with friends… all simple things, but that I can entertain in their simplicity.
(IT).

Aziende storiche come Borsalino attraversano momenti difficilissimi. Nonostante tutto , tu ci hai creduto.
Cloche enormi in Murmasky, berretti da baseball, berrettoni over.
Come sta andando?
Secondo me sì, piacciono.
